From Navy Base to ARTS DISTRICT

BRAVO ZULU - A Celebration of 10 Years since the opening of ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station

Commissioned in 1923, the historic Naval Training Center was the Cradle of the Navy in San Diego. Though closed in 1997, it continues to hold the memories of past generations and naval recruits whose lives were transformed at NTC.

Thanks to a collective civic vision and the efforts of many, what was a loss to San Diego’s navy prestige is now a major destination for arts and culture, Navy heritage, historic preservation, distinctive cuisine and retail, and an economic engine for the region.  The transformation of this Navy base into an ARTS DISTRICT is a model of what can be achieved.

Take a look back and see where we started with acres of shuttered Navy buildings and how they have been transformed to a vibrant and thriving hub for arts and culture. And see what’s ahead for this burgeoning destination.
